We know its going to be better than 2009 – but how much better? Randstad HR Consulting Newsletter Quarter 1 2010.

David Owens, Managing Director HR Partners reports on 2009 and what 2010 brings.

Yes it is going to be a better year than 2009, even the ultra cautious have started admitting that it is going to be no worse than 2009, I am more in the “it is already better camp”.  .I know recruiters are pretty famous for talking up their market- I think it is more to do with their optimism than anything else, we recruiters tend to see the opportunities and focus on them- the second question to ask a recruiter is how much better is it going to be ?

I think we are seeing genuine momentum in the market- some new jobs are being created- some long vacant jobs are now being filled and some much needed headcount approved- we are also seeing that pent up demand for a new role starting to permeate the market. Job seekers are now presenting themselves as they feel more confident there will be opportunities available to them.

So many people have stayed in jobs 12- 18 months longer than they had planned- I think for some the GFC has been a handbrake applied to fast tracking careers- ambitions have been asphyxiated and careers put on ice, as we have had to work more at survival and cost containment than stellar growth and expansion. But, that was then…

I work in a very small segment of the recruitment market, a specialised market – The HR recruitment market is quite compact but with offices in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney we are in a great position to view the HR recruitment market on the east coast with some confidence- this is possibly a bit early for bold predictions but I think the second quarter will be better than the first and the second half of the year should eclipse the first.

What drives the temperature in any market is supply and demand- as I write this today there is a close relationship between the 2. Demand marginally outweighs supply in the specialist world of HR, what will turn the hot plate to maximum is a real return to health among European and North American Businesses- together with a migration of skilled Hr Professional to the Middle east and SE Asia – these phenomenon are some months possibly even 12- 18 months away- and whilst this is the case – I think we in Australia will be confined to a steadily improving market – single digit growth rates and relatively modest salary inflation. No matter how you look at it though we should anticipate good people being in demand and there being enough companies interested in quality HR Professionals to stimulate demand for this very much in demand profession.
